Jason Koon has been chosen to take on Phil Hellmuth in the $1,600,000 High Stakes Duel III after Scott Seiver pulled out citing personal reasons. The GGPoker ambassador is a popular choice and seen as a polar opposite of Hellmuth in both personality and playing style.
Jason Koon to Take on Phil Hellmuth in High Stakes Duel Heads-Up
The legend @phil_hellmuth and I will be playing each other in a $800,000 buy-in heads up match! https://t.co/vyLP5cdHtW
— Jason Koon (@JasonKoon) August 15, 2022
Currently no date has been agreed upon, but we expect to hear in the coming days when the pair will get it on in the PokerGO studio.
Dan “Jungleman” Cates will no doubt be extremely disappointed. Over the last couple of days he was pushing his fans to shout for him to be Seiver’s replacement but it wasn’t to be.
Can Phil Hellmuth Continue His Winning streak?
There’s no doubt that Jason Koon is one of the very best poker players on the planet right now. Easily in the top 10 and probably in the top 5.
But Phil Hellmuth is on an incredible run of nine wins to a single defeat in this format. The short stacked nature of the High Stakes Duel plays right into the Poker Brat’s skill set.
Hellmuth beat both Antonio Esfandiari and Daniel Negreanu 3-0 before demolishing FS1 sports talk show personality Nick Wright who declined a rematch.
Tom “durrrr” Dwan then took up the challenge and Hellmuth tasted defeat for the first time before getting his revenge in the rematch.
Sadly, Dwan was unable to take part in the third round and so Scott Seiver volunteered and promptly lost.
But the show’s rules state that players must win three matches in a row before being able to walk away with the prize money. Therefore Phil Hellmuth has no choice other than to face whoever PokerGO deem suitable.
This battle promises to be entertaining. Two contrasting styles: Koon with his expert level knowledge of GTO correct play and Hellmuth’s intuitive “white magic” strategy.
What we might not get to see is Phil Hellmuth going on one of his infamous rants during play. Jason Koon is known to be a classy guy with impeccable manners and is unlikely to try to rile his opponent for the sake of making the show more interesting.
