In our Poker Hand of the Week we are analyzing the most spectacular hand of High Stakes Poker Season 9 between poker legends Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu and Patrik Antonius, where the Finn makes Daniel fold a higher Full House!
Poker Hand of the Week Setup
Our Poker Hand of the Week comes from the latest episode of High Stakes Poker Season 9, which features poker superstars Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Tom Dwan and Patrik Antonius.
They are playing 7-max NL $500/$1,000 and Phil Ivey has Daniel Negreanu and Patrik Antonius covered, while the latter has the smallest stack at the start of our Poker Hand of the Week.
Poker Hand of the Week Action
Preflop:
Patrik Antonius open-raises with from UTG+1 to $2,500, newcomer Jonathan Gibbs calls in middle position with as do Daniel Negreanu on the button with and Phil Ivey from the small blind with . Pot Size: $11,500
Flop:
4 players see a very exciting flop of , where both Patrik Antonius and Daniel Negreanu flop a set, while Phil Ivey flops top pair with a strong kicker.
Set over Set constellations usually mean massive pots, but both DNegs and Ivey only call Patrik’s $5,000 continuation bet, while Gibbs gets out of the way. Pot Size: $26,500
Turn:
The makes this hand an even bigger cooler as Phil Ivey improves to Trips, while Patrik and Daniel fill up!
Ivey checks and Patrik Antonius checks behind with the full house. DNegs, who also has a full house does go for value though by making a $26,000 pot size bet. Both Phil Ivey and Patrik Antonius continue to slowplay and just call. Pot Size: $104,500
River:
on the river and Phil Ivey and Patrick again check to Daniel. Negreanu now must suspect that he has the best hand, and he actually does!
DNegs decides $54,000 (52% pot) is the right sizing to get paid. Phil Ivey sits in an unfavourable position, as he is sandwiched between Daniel and Patrik and this is probably one of the main reasons, why he is making an excellent fold.
Antonius is not folding though, instead he check-raises All-In for $153,000! Daniel only has to call $99,000 in order to win $311,500 giving him pot odds of almost 4 to 1 , but he folds Nines Full of Tens!!! Daniel folds the best hand, while Patrik Antonius wins a $311,500 pot with a lower full house.
Poker Hand of the Week Analysis
What a sick hand and cooler! Let’s take a close look what happened here.
Preflop is pretty standard, except for the fact that Daniel Negreanu could 3-bet and squeeze from the button with Pocket Nines. However, given the fact that Patrik, who has been playing tight so far, raised from UTG and Jonathan Gibbs called in front of him, makes a call and trying to hit a set a decent option. Ivey also comes along with KTo from the big blind.
You couldn’t ask for a much more interesting flop as it hits three of the biggest names hard. DNegs is way ahead though and 92% to win the hand as he has flopped set over set, while Ivey “only” has top pair and needs runner-runner.
The Ten on the turn is one of the cards Ivey needs though and his odds actually increase significantly from only 3 to 10%, since now he has outs. Negreanu and Antonius both improve to a Full House, while Patrik is basically dead having only one out with a Five for Quads.
The river is a blank and Ivey and Antonius check over to Negreanu for a second time. Daniel decides half pot is the right value sizing. Phil ivey makes a brilliant fold as Patrik is still to act behind him and he suspects that one of them has him beat.
Patrik Antonius is never folding a full house here though and he springs, what he believes is a trap, by check-shoving for $153,000 total.
The only problem is Daniel Negreanu has him beat and DNegs only has to call $99,000 in order to win $311,500 giving him pot odds of almost 4 to 1.
Although Patrik is never bluffing here and could have a hand such as Pocket Queens, I think you have to call here, when you get 4 to 1. Daniel disagrees and folds not only a full house, but also the best hand, while Antonius wins a huge $311,500 with the worse hand!
Poker Hand of the Week Conclusion
The special thing about this hand is that three of the best poker players in the world collide in a massive pot, where all three of them end up having a really strong holding. You don’t get to see that very often.
There are two key takeaways from this hand: Phil Ivey makes an excellent fold on the river with Trips King Kicker against a single bet by Daniel Negreanu and most importantly, don’t fold a full house on the river, if you get pot odds of 4 to 1!
First of all, it is a disaster from a mathematical perspective, when you end up folding the best hand as Daniel Negreanu does here and secondly you overfold and open yourself up to get exploited by your opponents, which is not what you want to do in Texas Hold’em.
