Poker Hand of the Week Analysis
Sick bluff by Eric Persson! Let’s take an in-depth look at it.
Garrett’s preflop raise from late position with Pocket Sevens is as standard as Stanley’s call on the button with Q10s. Absolutely non-standard is Eric Persson’s 3-bet from the big blind with 720, especially given the fact that they are not even playing the 7-2 game! Both opponents call.
On the flop, Persson decides to not make a continuation bet as he has two opponents and this board texture hits the calling range of them pretty hard. It checks to Tang, who has top pair, a gutshot and a backdoor flush draw, but he, for whatever reason, decides to check behind.
On the turn the board pairs and Eric goes for a delayed cbet. Garrett gets out of the way and Stanley calls.
The Jack on the river double pairs the board and Eric has Seven-high. The only way of winning the hand is by betting and Persson bets 76% pot to make it look like a value bet.
Then he starts talking to Tang by saying: “In this spot you should do the opposite what you think is right”, which leaves Stanley Tang visibly confused and he goes deep into the tank for two minutes, while Eric continues his speech play.
And it pays off! After two minutes Tang folds his hand just to get shown the worst hand in Texas Hold’em and a very gutsy 7-2 Bluff.
Poker Hand of the Week Conclusion
While tanking and going through the hand Stanley Tang said: “I was trapping on the flop”, but all he really did was trapping himself and giving Eric Persson a chance to bluff him.
All he needed to do to win the hand was betting the flop with top pair and gutshot, when checked to. By not doing so, he opened the door for the board to pair twice as well as gave Eric Persson the chance to bluff him off the best hand.
The lesson learned here: Bet with your value hands and don’t slow play on wet and draw-heavy boards.
