Patrik Antonius Introduces New Advanced Shot Clock for Poker Tournaments

The new shot clock for poker introduced by Patrik Antonius was developed to speed up live poker tournaments and to avoid stalling. It is already in use at the Patrik Antonius Poker Challenge.

For this series the new tech will only be in use during the high roller events with a view to promoting the positive change for other series.

The high stakes community looks to be happy at the change which is designed to give a much better playing experience for those who are constantly annoyed by the slow play tactics of their opponents.

The issue is two-fold. First, players are known to stall when short-stacked and the tournament is approaching the bubble in the hope of somebody else busting out.

The other point is the issue of players trying to balance their timing tells by simply wasting time before making an obvious decision, such as folding junk in early position.

Will the New Shot Clock for Poker Catch on?

As is usually the case with a major change to a game or sport, it’s going to come down to fashion if the idea catches on.

Rob Yong tweeted that he hopes all high rollers implement this and then tagged Triton and PokerGO into the thread.

With two heavy hitters in poker like those companies following suit, live poker could be revolutionised during this year and next. No longer will it be seen by many players, particularly online grinders, as slow and boring.

Keeping pre-flop decisions to a minimum is a great way to streamline tournaments. Patrik Antonius also mentioned that the PAPC has been generous with timebanks for more complex post-flop decisions.

A total of 15 timebank chips were handed to each player, making sure that such high-value tournaments were not devalued by forcing quick decisions onto the players.

The clock was introduced at the PAPC series back in 2019 but the Covid-19 pandemic has obviously killed any momentum of the technology being introduced at other mainstream events.

“The main difference I want the shot clock to make is that you don’t take time just to balance your time ranges”

It was actually the high roller events that Antonius had in mind when wanting to make this change.

“The high rollers are moving really slowly. When you have a tough decision, you need to take a lot of time. The main difference I want the shot clock to make is that you don’t take time just to balance your time ranges and the game flow stays good. I don’t like when players take 30 seconds and then check behind. After three seconds, you know what you are going to do most of the time.”

Time will tell if this positive change catches on, but so far it is looking like the players might be able to force it through if enough interest is shown.
