Damian Salas Wins 2020 WSOP Main Event Heads-Up Finale for $1,000,000
Last night the eagerly-awaited 2020 WSOP Main Event Heads-Up took place between Damian Salas from Argentina and Joseph Hebert from the USA at the RIO Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. It was an epic battle over 173 with the better end for Damian Salas, who took home the whopping $1,000,000 prize and now carries the prestigious title of Poker World Champion.
The Heads-Up was the culmination of two $10,000 Main Events. The first tournament was an international leg held on GG Poker, which attracted 674 runners and saw Salas claim the $1,550,969 first place prize.
The second tournament was the US leg, which drew 705 players to WSOP.com and saw Joseph Hebert turn a $300 satellite seat into a life-changing $1,553,256 payday.
Epic Heads-Up sees the lead change back and forth
The heads-up of the 2020 WSOP Main Event was absolutely epic lasting 173 hands with the lead changing back and forth several times.
This was also due to the excellent and very deep stacked structure consisting of a 500,000 starting stack (500 big blinds) and 20 minutes levels.
Damian Salas got off to a better start almost reaching a 2 to 1 chiplead within the first 66 hands, but then things turned around dramatically.
Joseph Hebert takes a huge lead
In Hand #71, Hebert won a huge pot when he flopped trip kings against Salas’ two pair to pull out to a more than 3:1 chip lead.
And Joseph Hebert didn’t stop there as he managed to increase his lead even further.
Joseph Hebert had a 9 to 1 chiplead at one point!
At one point Hebert had a massive 898,000 to 102,000 or 9 to 1 chiplead and everything looked like a done deal.
However, Damian Salas never gave up and fought his way back into it by winning the first all-in confrontation on Hand #83 with A♦2♣ against K♦5♥ from Hebert, when an Ace showed up on the flop.
After that, Damian Salas managed to win several decent-sized pots and started to close the gap and in hand #136 he indeed managed to take over the lead.
However, it was far from over as during the ensuing period, the chiplead went back and forth numerous times. Whenever one of the opponents got short, he managed to stack or double up.
Predecision in favour of Damian Salas in Hand #170
In Hand #170, they got it in with each holding an ace, but Damian Salas had Joseph Hebert outkicked holding with A10 vs. A8.
The board didn’t change that and Salas catapulted into an almost 4:1 lead. Again Joseph Hebert came back doubling up in the very next hand and both were once again nearly back to even.
However, Salas was still in the lead and in Hand #173 Hebert moved all-in from the button holding A♦Q♠ and Salas made the call with K♦J♠.
Joseph got it in good, but the board 5♣K♠8♠5♦K♣ brought Damian Salas a full house and the decision in his favour.
Damian Salas is the 2020 WSOP Main Event Champion
After making the November Nine in 2017 and finishing in a disappointing 7th place, Damian Salas now got this revenge and is your 2020 WSOP Main Event Champion.
The Argentinian takes home the staggering $1,000,000 first place prize, a coveted gold bracelet, and the prestigious title of Poker World Champion. Felicidades Damian!
