Alex Foxen is in prime position to win the Global Poker Index Player of the Year award for the second year running. The 28-year-old American recently vaulted to the top of the standings and is set to make history.
No player has so far won more than one GPI Player of the Year title, let alone back-to-back.
Alex Foxen Crushes WPT Five Diamond
After starting the final month of the year in tenth place, Alex Foxen had a barnstorming WPT series in Las Vegas to rise to the top of the GPI. He accumulated six cashes at the WPT Five Diamond, including a win and none less than fifth place.
The net result was more than $2 million flowing into his pockets, putting his lifetime live tournament record over $15 million.
Speaking to WPT.com after his incredible performance Foxen said,
“It’s surreal – it’s kind of hard to put into words. It feels amazing. The last time I got to this spot I was a little bit disappointed in how I played heads-up. It’s just incredible to get the opportunity again and be fortunate enough to pull out the win.”
Results such as these confirm Foxen’s place amongst the world’s elite tournament players. Last year he won more than $6.6 million from live tournaments and racked up no less than five victories
.
Last Minute charge
This is the second time in three years that Alex Foxen has final tabled the $10,000 + 400 No Limit Hold’em – WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic. Second place would have been enough to sit atop the GPI ranking, but he crushed it anyway.
After a tense year’s fight for GPI supremacy, we will find out the final standings on New Year’s Day.
We will officially announce all @gpi Players of the Year on Wednesday, January 1st … we will be spending the next 10 days reviewing all results and obtaining any missing results

Eric Danis confirmed that the final week of the year will be spent double checking everyone’s points.
A repeat of the debacle that saw Daniel Negeranu lose his World Series of Poker Player of the Year award the week after he won it, would be the height of embarrassment.
Foxen’s girlfriend Kristen Bicknell is also on for a respectable finish in the standings. Currently sat in 13th place, the two-time WSOP gold bracelet winner from Canada has had a great year.
Eight six figure cashes in 2019 has taken her close to $5 million in live tournament winnings.
