Daniel Negreanu to not re-enter poker tournaments in 2020!
Daniel Negreanu first posted on Twitter that he is considering to not re-enter poker tournaments in 2020, but then backpedalled only a couple of days after realising he would lose a lot of EV.
There is a huge ongoing discussion about re-entry tournaments in the poker world and Daniel Negreanu is once again right at the centre of it.
The new GGPoker ambassador is very active on Twitter and posted a couple of days ago that he won’t be re-enter in any poker tournaments in 2020:
I’m also considering playing all of 2020 with no reentry.
That means I won’t cash as often.
Won’t make as many final tables, but at least I won’t be taking part in something I don’t thing should exist, or at least be the norm.

Why do re-entry poker tournaments cause a huge discussion?
The big problem about re-entry poker tournaments is that it heavily favour pros or high rollers over amateurs and recreational players.
Their basically infinite bankroll gives them the opportunity to fire 5-10 bullets, while recreational players often only having one shot causing an unfair advantage:
WSOP Europe:
Every single event is re-entry and most of them are UNLIMITED re-entry.
These are WSOP bracelet events.
This is not poker.
This is open up your wallet and try to build a big stack, and if you bust, open up your wallet and do it again. And again. And again.— Norman Chad (@NormanChad) October 19, 2019
Daniel Negreanu asks his fans on Twitter what to do…
Shorty after Daniel made his post that he is considering not re-enter in poker tournaments in 2020, it seemed that some doubts arose, if this really is a goof decision.
That’s why KidPoker took to Twitter and asked his followers what to do.
Here is the results of the poll:
Which of these things do you think I should do in 2020:
Play one bullet and never reenter
OR
Reenter but play first and all bullets without purposely making -EV decisions to build a stack
OR
Do what I’ve always done

As you can see above it was a very close call as 30.4% voted for re-enter carefully, 34% for only one bullet, and 35.6% for re-enter as much as possible.
However, it is very sursprising that re-enter as much as possible got the most votes and when you can A and C together then 66% voted in favour of re-entry tournaments.
….and then quickly backpedals
This result in combination to the advice from other pros that re-entry tournaments are actually one of Negreanu’s biggest edges nowadays as he has an basically infinite bankroll, made Daniel Negrenu quickly backpaddle:
“It’s just really stupid from my perspective to burn EV“
“I talked to a lot of people and realized it’s just really stupid from my perspective to burn EV, for what? To take a stand for something that’s not going to work. It’s not like if I don’t rebuy you’ll stop seeing them do re-entry events. It’s just not going to happen because they make so much money off of them. So then I thought about it from a strategic perspective and it’s just not the approach. I can still play by the rules that are given to me the best way that suits me, and also campaign and lobby for sites to do more freezeouts.”
