Peter Jepsen convicted of cheating to 3 years in jail, $4,000,000 seized

A Danish poker pro -suspected to be former EPT Warsaw winner, Peter Jepsen – has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for conducting a Trojan spyware fraud against fellow poker players. A $118k fine and $3.86 million confiscation order has also been levied by a Copenhagen court this week.

Although not officially named by the prosecutor, it is widely known that Peter ‘Zupp’ Jensen was the chief suspect in a scam that saw him sell infected laptops to fellow pros and close friends.

Remote Access Trojan

The laptops contained pre-installed spyware that allowed him to see his opponents’ hole cards. The indictment, in January of this year, listed Copenhagen, Aarhus, Las Vegas, and Berlin as places that the RATs were installed.

In addition, it was believed that several break-ins during an EPT Barcelona stop and others, were done with the purpose of installing the Remote Access Trojan, more commonly known as a RAT.

In total eight Danish poker players reported the scammer to police in 2014 – with claims that the hacking scam dated as far back as 2008 – but it was only this May that the case was taken up by Danish prosecutors.

Sentenced to prison

This week the Copenhagen City Court sentenced the poker pro to two and a half years in prison, a term that includes a 6-month reduction because the case had taken so long, according to prosecutor Lisette Jørgensen.

The identity of the convicted fraudster continues to be held anonymous under Danish law, but it has been an open secret for a long time that Jepsen is the man in question, with others – including Danish police IT worker – also implicated.

The poker community has been updating the various forum threads on the situation over the years.

One 2plus2 poster stating in December of 2014: ‘A (sic) anonymous person tells, that prime suspect has (sic) offered $800,000 to the 8 persons as a settlement. This offer was made before the public knew about the case.’

‘Confession’ heard in court

The court heard from three witnesses during the trial, one of whom stated that Jepsen confessed to his hacking during a lake-side stroll in Copenhagen.

He is reported to have admitted: “He says he installed the program to see my cards,” although Jensen denied all the charges against him and is reportedly planning an appeal to have his conviction quashed.

EPT victory

Peter Jepsen has $604,458 in recorded live cashes on the Hendon Mob database, the biggest – $415,679 – for his Main Event victory in EPT season 3 in Warsaw.

At one point he also held the record for the biggest online pot won, after taking $499,037 from Tom Dwan during a $500/$1000 NLHE session back in 2008.

Viktor “Isildur1” Blom was among other victims who apparently faced Jepsen during the years he is suspected of running his Trojan plan.

However, the $800,000 he lost on .turned out to be against Robert ‘Gulkines’ Flink playing under Jepsen’s name.

Against the ‘rules’ but hardly unheard of in those days although Jepsen was forced to pay back the money Viktor Blom lost.
