The 3rd annual Poker Masters concluded last night. The famous high roller series featured 10 events held at its usual venue, the Aria Casino in Las Vegas.
Each year they give out the Purple Jacket to the player with the best performance over the 10 events. This year, we had quite a blowout.
American poker pro Sam Soverel cashed in 7 (!) out of the 10 events, winning two of them. He cashed for a total of $1.397 million in the series and collected an additional $100,000 prize for winning the Purple Jacket.
Sam Soverel Wins $50,000 Poker Masters Main Event for $680,000
34 players entered in the 2019 Poker Masters Main Event. By the time it got down to the final table, it was assured that the Purple Jacket was going for Soverel – no player still alive in the tournament had enough points going in to catch up with him.
That comforting though worked in Sam Soverel’s favor as he powered through the final table that featured some of the world’s biggest high rollers. The defending Purple Jacket holder Ali Ismirovic and famous British poker pro Stephen Chidwick were among his opponents.
The last two remaining in the Main Event were Sam Soverel and Chris Hunichen.
The heads-up battle ended with Hunichen reluctantly calling off a pre-flop shove with pocket Deuces. Soverel was holding Q10 – a Queen on the flop meant that he secured the Main Event win as well, thus he can sport the Purple Jacket in style.

The trophy was presented by its previous holder, the Bosnian Ali Ismirovic. Upon receiving it, Sam Soverel had this to say:
“It’s exciting to win. I just like being in action all the time and when you win you get to play the longest.”
He also reflected on what it was like playing against the very best poker has to offer.
“I’m glad I don’t feel like I’m at a big disadvantage when playing these guys whereas in the past I kind of felt like that. I come from a cash background and I know I didn’t study enough and understand things like the impact of the big blind ante, but I understand it a bit better now and I think that my live background helps me a lot in the rest of the game.”
Soverel now has $12.889 million in live tournament earnings. His biggest score is winning a $100K Aria Super High Roller for $1.024 million in 2016.
