Some of poker’s biggest names gathered in the small seaside town of Przno in Montenegro. The venue was the luxurious Maestral Resort & Casino for the €300,000 Triton Poker Cash Game. The game was Short Deck (aka 6+) Hold’em.
Short Deck Hold’em isn’t played with a small and a big blind, rather all players post antes, while the player on the button posts the single button blind, usually double the ante.
So this is what we mean when we say the stakes were €2,000/€4,000. The minimum buy-in in the game, as the name suggests, was €300,000.
The players at the table were: Daniel “Jungleman” Cates, Paul Phua, Robert Flink, Timofey “Trueteller” Kuznetsov, Mikita “fish2013” Badziakouski, Rui Cao and Tan Xau.
All of these men are regulars at Triton’s nosebleed stakes cash games. And they weren’t afraid to give each other some action this time either.
Here are the 3 biggest pots of the night.
#3 €384,000 Pot – Paul Phua vs Robert Flink
Rui Cao got dealt KT suited UTG and decided to limp – as a reminder that we’re not playing “full deck” Hold’em. 4 people – Phua (87 suited), Trueteller (QJ off), Jungleman (AT suited), Badziakouski (67 suited) – flatted behind, then Flink checked his button blind with pocket 9’s.
The 5-way flop came A69, two spades. Paul Phua was the first to bet (over half pot) with a flopped straight with a flush re-draw – remember, in short deck, Ace through 9 is the wheel. Flink re-raised with his middle set. This knocked everyone out of the pot but Phua, who called.
The turn was the Jack of clubs. Phua checked, then Robert Flink moved all-in. The shove got called, so the pot ballooned up to €384,000.
The two agreed to run it twice. The Malaysian businessman claimed both halves of this hefty pot.
#2 €493,000 Pot – Trueteller ships it in
This hand started with four limps – limping was quite common in the €300,000 Triton Poker Cash Game. When it got to Tan Xuan in the cutoff, he made it 8 BB’s. This got 3 folds, Phua called with pocket 7’s. Then it got back to Timofey “Trueteller” Kuznetsov who limp-re-raised all-in with his pocket Q’s.
His stack was €409K, which made the pot €493,000. Unfortunately for him, no-one called. This meant that the biggest pot of the night was yet to come.
#1 The Biggest Hand of the €300,000 Triton Poker Cash Game – Jungleman Hits a Royal Flush in €552,000 Pot
And it was a truly special hand.
Daniel “Jungleman” Cates limped in UTG+2 with AT suited. Mikita Badziakouski followed suit with KJ suited. Rui Cao squeezed from the cutoff with AT off. Paul Phua called in the button blind with QT suited, so did the limping Jungleman.
Then Badziakouski came in for the limp-re-raise all-in this time. Only Jungleman called, then berated his opponent once the cards were turned. With this action, the pot grew to a whopping €552,000 pre-flop.
The board was agreed to be dealt twice.
The first flop fell T97, all spades. The 8 of clubs gave “fish2013” the Jack-high straight with no outs for Jungleman to improve. €276,000 went for the Belarusian poker pro.
The second board was quite a sight to see.
KKQ on the flop put Badziakouski heavily in the lead, a 93% favorite with trip K’s. The Q of hearts gave Cates a flush draw and some hope since in this game, a flush beats a full house.
The 5th street gave him even more than that – the Jack of hearts for the absolute nuts Royal Flush!
