A Rare Durrrr Interview
Tom Dwan is not the type of person who actively seeks out the spotlight. He seldom gives interviews.
This time, however, he sat down with the hosts of the Poker Central Podcast to discuss a vast array of issues.
Sweating “Durrrr” and they don’t even stay until the end?! @TomDwan explains on the #PokerCentralPod. 😰🙈

Tom Dwan vs. Phil Hellmuth Feud
The first topic was a classic, Hellmuth going off on him “Poker Brat-style” during the 2008 NBC Heads-Up Championship.
Dwan sucked out on Hellmuth with his pocket 10’s against Aces. The frustrated Hellmuth famously told Dwan “we’ll see if you’re even around in five years”.
Tom Dwan confirmed that there in fact was animosity between the two for a couple of years after the incident. However, that later faded away. The two appeared on Poker After Dark together last month, and even went to entertain the US Troops deployed in the Middle East a few years ago.
Tom Dwan on the Triton Million
“Durrrr” is known to be a close friend of Paul Phua, the Malaysian businessman who’s involved in organizing the Triton high roller events.
Thus, Dwan has an insight into the series’ dealings. He talked very favorably about their recent historically large poker tournament, the £1 million buy-in event in London. He also mused about what he wants the future of poker to look like.
“I think what Triton’s trying to do is come up with new ideas and new dynamics. You know, at its core, in at least my opinion (…), poker’s a game. And there’s competitive aspects to it. But I don’t think you want to sportify it too much. You want to keep the comradery aspect and the game aspect while still having competition going on. And I thought the way Triton did the Million, in hindsight, I thought it was great. I was nervous when Paul was initially talking about it. I thought ‘how the hell are we gonna get this thing to work?’, you know.”
Tom Dwan on Poker After Dark
As we mentioned, Tom Dwan appeared on Poker Central’s revived version of PAD last month. This was the second time he was on the new iteration of the show, he played during the first episode as well.
However, he was also a regular feature on the original run of Poker After Dark, airing on NBC between 2007 and 2011.
Dwan reminisced about those times. He was a fan favorite then known for his ambitious bluffs.
“I think people didn’t believe I ever had it around those TV shows. You know, I was probably playing a little extra crazy with the TV lights on or whatever. It’s just happened that every bluff I made worked, so I just kept doing it.”
He also shared a story about himself and another online poker legend, Viktor “Isildur1” Blom. According to Dwan, he was playing Isildur heads-up on 6 tables while the production crew of PAD was setting up the set. He only quit the tables when the questioning got too distracting.
Tom Dwan also touched on a number of other topics.
