Recently-dethroned world number one Justin Bonomo fought back yesterday with a victory worth £2,670,000 in the Triton Poker Short Deck Main Event in London.
The £100k buy-in event saw seven men return for the final table of the 36-card poker variant, with Malaysia’s Wai Kin Yong looking to repeat his success in the full-deck version of the Main Event just a few days previously.

Also battling for a massive share of the £10,370,000 prize fund were Triton founder Paul Phua, Isaac Haxton, Rui Cao, Ming Zhong Liu, and Liang Xu. The Asian players were among the first to adopt the exciting short deck variant in their high stakes cash games Macau.
Liu fell at the first hurdle, and he was soon followed by the Cao/Haxton duet, a double blow delivered by Yong, who at times seemed unstoppable.
Liang Xu’s Biggest Success
Paul Phua, who along with Wai Kin’s father Richard Yong, are the pair behind the Triton Poker story, would be next to leave. Just in the Main Event, he would be knocked out by Wai Kin Yong.
The surprise story of the final table was Liang Xu. His 3rd place finish gave the businessman the most significant cash of his poker life. The £1,202,500 prize ensured his London trip would be break-even having played the £1million buy-in Triton Million last week.

Bonomo versus Yong heads-up for the title was, as expected, a tight affair. The Short Deck format had a few shocks in store for the duo.
Just when it looked as though Bonomo was heading for the rail in second, he hit a saving jack of clubs on the river. Incredibly, he hit the same card on the river just minutes later to topple Yong’s dreams of a double title win.
