WPT Global have introduced an old-school option to their schedule by adding a thrice-daily freezeout tournament, the aptly-named One Shot
Once the mainstay of online poker offerings, freezeouts have been surpassed by re-entry and re-buy tournaments, where the number of bullets you can afford seems to eclipse poker skill.
Now WPT Global are bringing back the single entry format:
“Experience the thrill of pure freezeout. You get One Shot – Make it Count!” reads the advertising blurb and for many players it will be a new experience.
The One Shot tournaments will run three times a day and cost just $15 to play, with combined guarantees of $7000. Single entry, single champion is the goal, though plenty others will get paid of course.
Two out of the three tourneys are Progressive Knockout (PKO) format, with $2k guarantees, while the third is a $3k GTD traditional freezeout.
All are 8-handed with 10k starting stacks, 10 minute blinds and late reg available, with an Asian-market option for their huge base of players based out East.
One Shot is the latest addition to a growing and varied offering from the WPT’s online site, which includes:

- Fast-paced action at 40 minutes past every hour with buy-ins ranging from $1.10 up to $88.
- WPT Daily Prime
- Premium tournaments running at five minutes past the hour, every hour.
- Golden Bounty Championship
- $25 buy-ins every day with a $100k GTD prizefund and big Sunday finish
- [Your Name] Deepstack
- This $5.50 daily will carry your name if you win it twice within 30 days
As PokerIndustryPro recently discussed, the rise and fall of Freezeouts is an interesting story. Once the standard, they were slowly replaced with rebuy tournaments, giving players more than one chance should things go belly-up early on.
However, the format also meant that pros with relatively unlimited bankrolls could fire as many bullets as needed to build a stack, while your average Joe amateur was limited to “One Shot”.
Over the years, many online operators have tried to please all their players, but when the likes of PokerStars don’t offer a single freezeout tournament outside of big series, you can see why WPT Global’s new tournament is a big talking point.
