$1.8million Bad Beat Jackpot Gives Canada Top 3 Scoops

The second-biggest live Bad Beat Jackpot ever landed this week in Quebec, with a straight flush clashing with quad 10s to give Canada the three largest such jackpots in history.

Loto-Qu-bec-Historic bad beat jackpot at the Casino du Lac-Leamy

Players at the Casino du Lac-Leamy poker room in Gatineau, Ottawa were happily grinding away at their $1/$3 No Limit Hold’em game when the incredible event occurred.

Reddit user Zi0nized shared the remarkable story:

“I sat down, and one minute later at the table beside me the bad beat hit. Over 2.5 million dollars on a 40/20/20/20% share. Second largest ever after the Playground in Montréal I think? Only 5 tables had to share the room share so we all bagged over 13k!”

Quads vs Straight Flush

The $1.8million hand struck as follows:

Player 1: 10♥ 10♦

Player 2: Q♣ 9♣

Board 9♠ K♣ 10♣ J♣ 10♠

Zi0nized explained: “Minimum quad 10s to win it. Ottawa/Gatineau region. Nice little score for recreational players!”

BBJ1

Nice little score indeed, with the winner (i.e. the quad-holding ‘loser’ in the hand!) picking up 40% of the prizepool, which amounted to US$726,000.

The straight flush picked up $363,000 but the two involved in the hand weren’t the only lucky ones. The other six players at the table had just won US$60,000 each, while every other player in the room (including our friend Zi0nized) won just shy of US$10k, a sweet little $9400 treat each for 38 Casino du Lac-Leamy regs and visitors.

The Ultimate Bad Beat Story?

There was one other ‘lucky’ player, although that term is arguable. In the table pic above, one stack is covered.

“What’s the story behind the lunch box? …Someone definitely missed on 100k+ over a cigarette or a bad lunch,” posted HoodFellaz.

“Hahaha! She missed it while going gambling in the pits…,” replied Zi0nized. However, a true bad beat story from a bad beat jackpot story was avoided.

“It was approximately 87,000$ CAD [US$60k]. She got lucky though the table ended up giving her about 17k.”

The Record Holder

The record for a BBJ still stands at fellow Quebec poker room, the Playground Poker Club. That jackpot hit in 2023 with a veery similar hand to this week’s effort – quad 10s again the ‘winning’ hand.

Hoan Truong: 10♣ 10♠

Marc Andre Ouellon: 6♦ 9♦

Board: 8♦ 10♥ 10♦ 7♦ 2♦

Hoan Truong pocketed US$710,000 while the straight flush ‘loser’, Marc Andre Ouellon, walked away with US$355,000. Others at the table benefited to the tune of US$59,000. All from a $1/$2 No Limit Hold’em game!

Third of the Best

Now sitting in third spot in the all-time BBJ rankings after this week’s scoop, the Playground was host to a US$1.7million jackpot in September of last year.

This time a $2/$5 NLHE cash game saw the lucky occurrence:

Elie: 9♠ 9♣

Yann: A♥ A♦

Board: A♣ 9♥ K♣ 9♦ A♠

That saw turned quads lose to rivered quads, but as we all know by now, the loser gets the lion’s share of the goodies.

In this case, that meant Elie had just won US$640,000 and Yann US$337,096, with the other players at the table picking up US$48,000 each. The remaining 20% of the prizefund was split evenly between other players in the room.
