The Slowroll of the Century Revisited

It’s been 10 years and poor Andreas Gann still hasn’t been forgotten – or forgiven – for the epic slowroll he pulled on Donnacha O’Dea. “The Don’s” fellow Irishman David K. Lappin recalled the viral “Slowroll of the Century” this week on X/Twitter…

Lappin was in the commentary booth that day 10 years ago, calling play at the final table of the 2015 PaddyPower Irish Open Main Event in Dublin.

The hand that caused all the kerfuffle? Let’s take a look in detail:

O’Dea: A♣ 6♣

Gann: K♦ Q♦

With the blinds at 25k/50k/5k, the Irish poker legend, sitting on 1.3million chips opened the betting for 2x. The commentary team were already on Gann’s case, a “Just get it in will ya!” among the calls.

However, Gann in the small blind only called … a rather strange decision given his roughly 5BB stack.

Flop: 6♦ A♦ 8♦

Gann had flopped the nuts and checked to O’Dea, with top two, who quickly put the German all-in for his last 3.5BBs. An instacall you’d think… but not for Gann!

Whatever was going on behind his dark glasses, it was about to make him Ireland’s ‘most hated poker player’ as he hummed and hummed for over a minute.

“Absolutely horrendous behaviour.”

“What is going on? If there’s any justice, an ace is going to roll off on this river,” called Lappin. “Absolutely horrendous behaviour.”

When Gann finally called, his tablemates were as shocked as the booth: Michael Wang, astonished; Donnacha himself, disgusted; Kevin Killeen, calling Gann out.

“The table are giving him a right going over,” was the call as boos rang out on the rail around the table. The turn eventually arrived:

Turn: 7♣

“Any justice and there will be an ace on the river!” was the call and to the delight of (almost) everyone in the venue…

River: 6♥

“Justice is Done!”

The other players and onlookers erupted in cheers and clapping as O’Dea filled his house to send Gann crashing out in 8th place.

“That’s what you get…you put in a three-minute slowroll against the absolute gentleman of Irish poker, and that’s what you deserve!” cried Lappin.

“Absolutely disgraceful, outrageous behaviour and justice is done!” added Feargal Nealon.

But what could possibly have caused Gann to behave in such a way? Well, it was an “accident” according to Gann himself. The German amateur was apparently unaware that it was frowned upon and was showing off to his friends and family, “increasing the drama” for them.

Nealon explained later after talking to Gann: “He thought that he did it because his family and friends were watching at home and that maybe he wanted to increase the drama and tension for them, like in a wild west movie, but that it wasn’t his intention to disrespect others.”

Nealon explained to him it simply wasn’t the done thing and that an apology to O’Dea was in order, which the German agreed to, and O’Dea accepted with his usual good grace.

Andreas Gann is far from the first or last player to slowroll an opponent. Occasionally it’s done through ignorance, as in Gann’s case, sometimes it’s done for fun, sometimes as a wind-up – friendly or otherwise.

We have all misread our hand at some time or another, but doing it when you’ve just flushed the goods on Phil Hellmuth perhaps isn’t the best idea if you want a quiet life!

  1. Negreanu’s Online Slowroll

Being slowrolled isn’t purely a live poker experience, as Daniel Negreanu found out last year in the WSOP Online Main Event on GGPoker.
