The biggest pot of Season 14 on High Stakes Poker produced yet another excruciating bad beat as Markus Gonsalves was rivered for a huge sum.
This was the pot of the night, for sure. High Stakes Poker always finds a way to produce drama and Monday’s episode didn’t disappoint. Unless you’re a Markus Gonsalves fan, of course.
Everyone folded to Brandon Steven on the button who then opened for $4,000 with 8♥ 6♠. Seth Gottlieb came over the top for $15,000 with A♥ Q♦ and Marc Kulick came along in the big blind with 6♥ 5♥.
Gonsalves, playing in the straddle, four-bet to $50,000 with K♠ Q♠ and was called by Gottlieb and Kulick.
The flop ran out J♣ 3♠ 4♦, giving Kulick an open-ended straight draw and missing everyone else. The players checked it around.
The turn was the Q♣ and Gottlieb led out for $65,000 with his top pair top kicker, and Kulick called in the hope of hitting his straight draw.
Now the action really started, Gonsalves decided his inferior top pair wass good enough to go with and so he jammed his remaining $196,000.
Gottlieb, who still had the best hand, couldn’t bring himself to call it off with such action in front of him in a multiway pot, pitching his hand into the muck. Kulick, however, got sticky with his straight draw and made the call.
As if scripted, the 7♣ landed on the river to complete his straight, stacking Gonsalves for a $613,000 pot which was the biggest of the first three episodes of the new Season 14.
Much to his credit, Gonsalves shook hands with all of his opponents before exiting the stage in what looked like still a state of shock.
