Dan Bilzerian has given his take on his relationship with indicted lawyer Tom Golstein, revealing that the pair played in high-stakes private games together.
Bilzerian’s back story to his own poker career is that he made his fortune by playing against ultra-wealthy opponents in some of these games.
What we didn’t know, until very recently, is that Tom Goldstein was another regular participant at the same tables, as revealed in Bilzerian’s book The Setup.
As we reported last week, Goldstein is facing a long stretch behind bars on 22 counts related to tax evasion and making false statements to mortgage lenders.
Dan Bilzerian Says Tom Goldstein Is the Biggest Degen Gambler He Ever Met
There’s no doubt that Dan Bilzerian will have met many degenerate gamblers in his lifetime. So when he tells us that Tom Goldstein is the worst of them all, we automatically sit up and take notice.
“To this day, I have never met anyone with less respect for money proportionate to their net worth than Tom. And I’ve met some true degenerates.”
It sounds as if Goldstein and Bilzerian know each other very well from this exclusive private games scene. In fact, the lawyer has represented the playboy on several occasions.
The pair met at the Bellagio almost two decades ago where Goldstein had built a reputation as a maniac poker player.
Bilzerian agrees, saying:
“People were all watching the game and talking about what a f***ing maniac he was. When I walked up, he had been playing without looking at his cards for two hours straight. Occasionally on the turn or the river, he would look and then fire huge bluffs.”
He added that Goldstein wasn’t a great poker player at all but his high level of intelligence and ability to read people stood him in good stead.
The Setup details many more stories involving the pair, usually about high-stakes prop bets and degenerate gambling in general.
We read how the pair agreed a $300,000 bet over whose car would win a race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway — Goldstein’s Ferrari 458 versus Bilzerian’s 1965 A/C Cobra.
The deal was that Bilzerian would have to abstain from sex or even masturbation for a month, while Goldstein would have to get stoned with Bilzerian if he lost.
In the end, Goldstein lost and made his way to Bilzerian’s Las Vegas apartment to blaze some buds.
The pair hit the bong for a short while before Goldstein said it had no effect on him and he got up and walked out.
Ten minutes later, Goldstein rang Bilzerian to say he had abandoned his Ferrari on Las Vegas Boulevard, unable to drive, and headed over to the poker room at the Bellagio.
Bilzerian got down there as quickly as he could only to find the lights left switched on and the keys in the ignition!
On arriving at the Bellagio, Goldstein borrowed money from his friend, leaving the car in his possession as security for what turned out to be six months.
If Tom Goldstein manages to dodge a stint behind bars, we hope he will write a biography of his own. We’re damn sure that he has many more similar stories to share based on what we have learned from Dan Bilzerian.
John Lauro of Lauro & Singer and Christopher Kise of Continental — both having represented the U.S. President Donald Trump — have indicated they will fight all charges, accusing the government of rushing into the case before all of the facts are clear.
