Guo Liang Wei has bagged his first EPT title after coming out on top in the $3,000 Mystery Bounty at the Merit Royal Diamond Hotel Casino & Spa.
The man from China made the long trip to Cyprus with a dream and almost succeeded right away with a sixth place score in the $1,100 Eureka Main Event for $78,770.
Yesterday, he came out on top of a field of 894 entries to have the best night of his poker career as he collected his first silver Spadie.
Action Recap
After a slow-paced Day 1, Day 2 saw the intensity rise considerably as the Mystery Bounties were released, with three $75,000 prizes up for grabs.
The first one to come out of the drawing box was awarded to Alik Zazian during the bubble period.
Matthias Lipp, who eventually finished in third place, pulled off the incredible feat of drawing not one but two of the $75,000 bounties.
At this point, the tournament began to look more like a regular one with no more massive prizes on offer for eliminating an opponent.
Karen Nazarian ended his entertaining run in sixth place after knocking out a whopping eight of his rivals along the way.
The two Romanians Nicolae Paunescu and Valeriu Rosca followed soon after, leaving us left with the podium finishers.
Matthias Lipp was no doubt already feeling happy with his bounty results but he was soon knocked out for a $118,810 prize in third, added to the incredible $161,000 worth of bounties, making him the most successful player of the event.
Wei had such a large lead as heads-up play kicked off, it didn’t look like we would see much of a battle, but luckily we were proven wrong.
Boris Kolev knuckled down and began a spirited fightback, including an early double-up.
But the tide soon turned and the Bulgarian was soon running out of chips. It all came to a head with a king-four versus-king-queen all-in confrontation where the better hand won and Wei completed his mission.
