Zewei Ding Reels in Maiden Bracelet in €1,000 NL Turbo Freezeout

Zewei Ding has won his first WSOP gold bracelet after emerging triumphant in the WSOP Europe €1,000 NL Turbo Freezeout.

The man from China achieved his poker dream after making the long trip to King’s Casino in Czechia, and he will be feeling somewhat relieved after the wheels almost came off as the final table stage began.

Ding takes home €35,351, the lion’s share of the €150,000 prize pool and, of course, a memory that he will never forget.

The turbo format guarantees fast-paced play and added excitement as players are forced to take more chances with the blinds rising every 20 minutes. There really is no time to hang around and play it safe.

As the final day kicked off, there were 152 contenders fighting over the top 23 spots who would receive a prize.

With the field whittled down to the money bubble, it was defending champion Bernd Gleissner who skulked off to the rail empty-handed.

And then we saw the usual explosion of pace following the bubble bursting with a flurry of eliminations coming quickly.

When the final table formed, no player had any advantage of note with all 10 stacks looking fairly even.

Dirk Schumacher was the first to leave after suffering one of the nastiest bad beats seen in the entire series. Top set with aces is tough to fold under any circumstances but when Ding turned a straight the German was heading home.

This hand gave Ding the chip lead and only a few hands later he took more than half of Marco Jansen’s stack after forcing a fold on the turn.

Play slowed down significantly at this point and it took an hour before the next player had his tournament life ended.

Ding then knocked out Maximilian Huber and Erik van Hulst who were followed by the next four in a matter of no time at all.

John Trast, Marco Jansen, Pel Nieuwenhuis, and De Han Kim all left the playing hall in quick succession to leave us with the final three.

Gal Naim must have been pleased with his day’s work. The Israeli was in serious danger in the early final table rounds but avoided all potential catastrophes along the way until his ace-deuce came up against the ace-king of Ding.

As the final two players squared up for heads-up play, Ding had a seven-to-one advantage which he didn’t relinquish.

After only five hands, it was all over when Stepan Khachaturyan jammed with five-three suited only to quickly find out that Ding held pocket kings.
