Jeremy Becker bounced back from a losing summer at the WSOP to land his first major title last, taking down event #2 at the Poker Masters for $255,000.
Of course, Becker actually came out ahead at the WSOP thanks to his $70k or so prop cross bet victory against Landon Tice. This week the New York-born pro tried his hand at a $10k for the first time outside of the WSOP Main Event.
Becker was one of 100 entries creating a nice round $1,000,000 prizepool with 15 players set to cash, bringing us to the usual talking point for such events – who goes home empty handed?
Jesse Lonis was the player at risk on the money bubble as he jammed from the big blind against Michael Moncek’s button raise. Lonis found himself ahead…
Moncek: 9♠ 8♦
Lonis: A♦ J♥
…but the flop had other ideas…
Flop: 7♦ 6♦ 5♣
Turn: J♣
River: 3♣
Among those in the paid spots, Chris Hunichen (14th for $20,000), Andrew “LuckyChewy” Lichtenberger (11th for $30,000), Dan Smith (10th, also for $30,000), and Event #1 champion Spencer Champlin (9th for the final $30,000 payout).
By the time day two dawned, only six players remained in contention, led by Becker with only Ren Lin in trouble at under 10BBs.
When the affable Chinese pro made his move with a middling ace, he ran smack bang into Daniel Sepiol’s pocket kings, the board bricking to send him to the rail with $50,000 in consolation tickets.
Nicholas Seward fell in 5th spot when he was outpipped in the ace- face-off, although the flop gave Moncek a sweat…
Seward: A♥ 8♥
Moncek: A♠ 9♣
Flop: K♣ 8♦ 5♦
…but normal service was resumed on the turn and river…
Turn: 9♦
River: 9♠
Sepiol’s exit came in a straightforward race which saw him outflop Moncek’s pocket 6s but the gutshot came in on the turn to oust Sepiol in 4th place for $90,000.
Sean Winter had to settle for third spot after a brutal flop…
Winter: K♥ K♦
Moncek: K♠ 9♠
Flop: Q♣ J♥ 10♣
Turn: 5♦
River: 8♠
…leaving Moncek heads-up against Becker and holding a 5:1 chip lead.
That didn’t last long though, back-to-back double-ups balancing matters before pulling away, and then finishing things off without too much of a fuss, Moncek’s last stand not quite holding up…
Moncek: A♥ 7♥
Becker: Q♠ 10♥
Flop: 6♣ 3♠ :2c
Turn: 10♦
River: 3♦
