Masashi Oya Defeats Jeremy Ausmus Heads-Up to Scoop $535,000

Japan’s Masashi Oya scooped a cool $535,000 last night in Northern Cyprus as the buy-ins at the PGT SHR Series continued to rise in the build-up to the Super High Roller Bowl this weekend.

Event #4 at the Merit Royal Diamond Hotel & Spa in Kyrenia was a $51,500 NLH (7-Max) tournament that attracted 30 entries, but only seven would make it through to day two and the final table.

That still wouldn’t be enough for a return on the not insignificant investment – $50k+ change is noteworthy even for the poker world’s highroller community. A top five finish would be required to see a share of the $1,142,500 prizepool.

It would take four-and-a-half hours of tight and tough play to decide who would be leaving ‘penniless’, Adrian Mateos first dispatching Samuel Ju and then cracking Danilo Velasevic’s kings to send him to the edge… Oya providing the final shove…

With $87,500 locked up the remaining five could breathe a little easier, but in the knowledge that 3rd place would pay for the next event and a win would give them ostensibly a freeroll to the grand finale, the $306,000 Super High Roller Bowl.

Mizzi wouldn’t get any further, though, his queen-ten dominated by Oya’s queen jack and then overnight chip leader Matthias Eibinger found himself in a similar position…

Eibinger: Q♦ J♦

Oya: K♣ Q♣

Flop: 5♦ 2♥ 3♥

Turn: 10♣

River: 4♣

Adrian Mateos was fresh off a runner-up spot in event #3 and looking to go one better, but his short stack was once again one pip short when he got his final few bigs in, nine-trey losing out to Oya’s ten-trey.

That gave the Japanese number one a 5-1 chip lead over Jeremy Ausmus going into heads-up play, but a double-up quickly redressed the balance.

The deciding hand saw Ausmus pick up kings in the big blind, electing to call Oya’s button 3-bet…

Ausmus: K♠ K♣

Oya: A♠ 6♣

“You can get stubborn with kings,” was the ominous commentary as Ausmus check-called the flop…

Flop: 8♠ 6♥ A♦

…and then check jammed the turn…

Turn: 5♣

Oya called with his two pair and when the river bricked…

River: Q♦

…the PGT title was his, along with $535,000, 321 PGT points, and the PGT Gold Cup.
