Chance Kornuth has flipped his way to a fourth WSOP bracelet in the GGPoker style $1,000 Flip & Go NL event.
A total of 1,088 players registered for the novelty tournament where players are all-in eight-way on every hand during Day 1 and then return for Day 2 under normal tournament rules.
Only 136 players advanced to Day 2 and they were all guaranteed a min-cash of $2,200 with $155,446 ear-marked for the winner.
Even as a man used to being immersed in the high-stakes scene, Chance Kornuth was still complimentary about the smaller event.
“I’ve made a pile of final tables without a W. So even though it’s a smaller one, it feels incredible. I think it’s fun, but a little bit gimmicky at the same time.
“Normally, it helps a ton [having a big stack], but I made a bunch of mistakes and got all the way down to 20 bigs.”
It might have helped that the American invested only three buy-ins as opposed to some of the other big names who were churning through buy-ins like a drunken sailor.
Final Action
With the tournament having a turbo structure, it took only four hours to eliminate more than half of the field.
Scott Seiver was on for his fourth bracelet of the summer but couldn’t do better than 86th place for $2,400. Chris Brewer was on his way out soon after in 59th for $3,135.
After the final three tables were set, the action relocated over to the Horseshoe Event Center from the Paris Convention Center.
The aggression level was muted for the first half hour but normal service was soon resumed. Shaun Deeb was one casualty, busting out in 14th for a $8,412 prize.
Takashi Ogura and John Armbrust were the first to leave the final table, Kornuth dispatching the former.
Ian Hamilton was next when his king-jack suited couldn’t beat the nine-eight of Xiaoyao Ma.
Filipp Khavin had started the final nine stage second in chips but he looked down to find ace-queen and an inopportune moment when the chip leader Mike Leah woke up with ace-king.
Leah then dealt with Ma when a fortunate ten turn saw his king-ten beat king-jack.
There then started 90 minutes of more circumspect play until Sean Whelan picked a spot to jam with king-jack. Kornuth called him off with ace-ten and knocked out his rival on an ace-high board.
Mike Leah’s stack had now dwindled to leave him vulnerable to the big stacks. And when he four-bet jammed pocket fours he found himself heading home when Kornuth’s ace-queen hit gin on the turn.
Thailand’s Kannapong Thanarattrakul was left as Kornuth’s only rival but the heads-up match lasted only a single hand. A standard ace-four versus queen-jack confrontation saw the title handed to the American.
