Chris Hunichen finally claimed his first gold bracelet after a fantastic performance in the $100K High Roller. The American denied Jeremy Ausmus and Viktor Blom who have both recently been in fine form.
Judging by the absolute racket coming from the rail, this is a candidate for the most popular win of the WSOP 2024. Hunichen is a popular figure in the community and his fans weren’t shy to let everyone know.
Event #47: $100,000 High Roller No-Limit Hold’em is the biggest event of the series so far, and the talent from the top to the bottom of the field was as tough as it gets.
Viktor Blom was the man holding a significant lead in front of his American rival but the run of play did not go his way on the final day.
After winning the event, Hunichen collected a winner’s cheque for $2,838,389, the biggest of his career thus far and comfortably more than the $ 1,931,718 he banked for a third place in the $250K High Roller two years ago.
Final Action
When the action resumed yesterday, Jeremy Ausmus was the man making moves. A quick double up through Chance Kornuth was followed by knocking out Justin Saliba in sixth place.
He then turned an ace in an ace-jack versus pocket fives confrontation against Big Huni only for a third five to drop on the river. The initiative had passed over and the rail went crazy.
After Kornuth was knocked out in fourth, Viktor Blom became the next target. It came down to a favourable all-in with “Isilidur1” hoping his king-jack would triumph against Hunichen’s ace-seven.
Sadly for the Swede, no helped arrived and the stage was set for a heads-up match that would begin with Hunichen holding a massive lead over Jeremy Ausmus.
As we write many times, things are rarely so simple in poker and this was no exception. Ausmus grinded hard and a timely three-outer helped him on his way to taking the lead.
But then lightning struck twice.
Ausmus managed to get an overpair all in against Hunichen’s top pair but rivered trips ended his run and Big Huni was the champion.
In a post-tournament interview, Hunichen said:
“No one’s ever due in poker, but I feel like I was due. And I’ve been in this position a couple times, got unlucky, a couple seconds. It was my time.”
