Sweden’s Magnus Edengren has struck gold in Event #43: $1,500 Mixed Omaha after denying Phil Hellmuth a record eighteenth bracelet.
Edengren outlasted a field of 853 entries to bank the top prize of $196,970 — almost double his previous career earnings.
The Swede’s victory is the first for his nation at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas this year and it came at a seven-man final table with six Americans standing in his way.
Final Action
Event #43: $1,500 Mixed: Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better; Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better; Big O (7-Handed) saw a long and hard fought Day 3 with 22 challengers expected to play down to a finish.
Phil Hellmuth was one of those and there was palpable anticipation over the possibility that he could extend his WSOP bracelets record to 18.
Sadly for the Poker Brat, he was eliminated in fourth place at the end of the day, leaving Edengren to battle with Tim Seidensticker and James Juvancic for the glory.
The unscheduled extra day didn’t promise us that much action as all three players were short stacked.
In the end it didn’t last any longer than half an hour. Edengren led from start to finish, applying pressure in that typical way often crafted by Scandinavian Omaha players.
James Juvancic was the first to go after his wheel draw didn’t come in followed by a couple of all-ins that went badly.
Edengren now had more than five times the chips of Seidensticker, making it a tough ask for the American.
It was the five-card variant that did for Seidensticker. Two pair and a queen-high flush draw had him sitting pretty for a much-needed double-up, but Edengren’s top pair and a king-high flush draw caught another king to make a better two pair.
Speaking to the media after his win, Edengren explained how he is no longer a regular poker player and only comes to Las Vegas occasionally to have some fun.
He was one of the original grinders from the boom years and doesn’t play anything but Omaha these days, adding that he thinks NL hold’em is boring.
“I haven’t started playing again. I just come to Vegas every year to have fun, and then I play some tournaments. I don’t really play poker anymore at all. I stopped a long time ago and just play for fun.”
“Just four cards for me; if there are any of those tournaments while I am in Las Vegas, I will play them.”
