Sergio Aido Victorious in $50K NL High Roller

Sergio Aido has pocketed a career best score of $2,026,506 after taking down the $50K NL High Roller in a field stacked with top-tier talent.

The Spaniard outlasted a field of 177 players which broke the previous record for Event #39: $50,000 High Roller No-Limit Hold’em (8-Handed).

Chance Kornuth was the man who came closest to stopping Aido, playing his part in one of the best heads-up duels we have seen in the WSOP 2024.

Final Action

Only 13 players returned to the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas to challenge for the title, but this one was one hell of a field.

UFC announcer Bruce Buffer started the day in last place, but the man everyone expected to be quickly outclassed wasn’t over-awed with the occasion.

Martin Kabrhel, the man who everyone seems to find a problem with, was out on the bubble in tenth place after losing a flip against eventual winner Aido.

Reigning champion Leon Sturm was the first to go from the final table, soon to be followed by Bruce Buffer who was delighted with his achievement in such company.

And then, just before the dinner break, Johannes Straver was out after his stack steadily evaporated, not finding any good spots all day.

Jonathan Jaffe and Jesse Lonis were next to see their challenges end after the Spanish Armada blew them into the water. Aido and Adrian Mateos were now both sitting pretty.

But poker is never so predictable and, in fact, it was Mateos who was next to leave. His compatriot called his shove with queen-eight and flipped over king-seven, hitting trips.

Viktor Blom, who led the way at the start of the day, and chance Kornuth were the only remaining threats to Aido who now had a huge chip lead.

Blom tried as hard as he could, entering several all-in confrontations, after which his stack was reduced to nothing by Kornuth who had now caught up to Aido and soon passed him.

The final hand was Aido’s flopped full house against the top pair of Kornuth which in heads-up play is almost impossible to get away from.

After being awarded his first WSOP bracelet, Aido said:

“Yeah, it feels very good, of course, it’s something special. So, yeah, I had a very good idea about this. The best thing in my poker career for me for the moment.

“I probably will celebrate, save some money, and play more. I’m going to play the $100k. Almost everything. I just play no limit, so I’m going to play no limit,”
