Jonathan Little has been posting some quality advice on how to build a bankroll in 2024.

To start off, Little points out that players must be playing in games that they can beat. This requires complete honesty and no kidding oneself. Playing in games that are too tough can be the end of a poker career before it even gets started.

Strict bankroll management is a must. Decide how conservative or aggressive you want to be and never stray from your strategy.

So, how can we tell if we are winning?

By keeping track of your results. Plenty of apps are available on your phone to input data from your sessions.

You can also use spreadsheets to track how many hours you play, the buy-in, your profit & losses, etc.

Build a Bankroll in the Right Games

With starting funds at the ready, it’s time to consider which games to play in. A pretty important decision where your favourite format isn’t as important as you might think.

Jonathan Little advises that timing is essential, a point that is often ignored by even professional players.

Find cash games where you can target when the weakest players are playing. Evening time and weekends are when recreational players will be having their fun.

And don’t forget to take advantage of promotions.

Finally, we’re sure that no player will want to continue playing at their starting stakes when trying to build a bankroll.

Shot-taking at appropriate times is crucial to moving up through the stakes.

“If a game is a little too big for you but exceptionally soft, it is probably fine to play.“

Similarly in cash games, if you're winning at $1/$3 with a somewhat healthy bankroll. Don't make the jump to $2 /$5 on a random Tuesday where there are a bunch of regs.
