Poker Hand of the Week Analysis
What a call by Mariano. Let’s go through this great poker hand street by street.
Preflop Eric limps from UTG+1, which mostly is a sign of weakness in a shorthanded game. Grandoli picks up on it and iso-raises 4x from the Hijack. Only Eric calls.
We go heads-up to a flop Jd9s6h, which has a little bit for both of them with Eric picking up a gutshot and Mariano flopping bottom pair.
Eric range-checks to the preflop raiser and Grandoli tries to take the pot down with a small 28% pot cbet. Eric check-calls.
The Kd on the turn is a very interesting card as it not only completes the OESD, but also gives Eric a double belly buster and Mariano a gutshot.
On top of that, Mariano has a very important blocker with the Queen as he blocks Q-10. Eric checks again and Mariano now bets 1.43x pot.
Why does he go so big here? Because he most likely puts Eric on a draw as the board is very wet and he doesn’t want to give him the odds to draw.
In a spectacular turn of events, Eric however check-raises 2.7x. Very strong play by Eric as many players would fold here. The Argentinian is not one of them though as he makes the call.
The river is the 3d completing the backdoor flush draw and now Eric gives away a tell as he double-checks his hole cards, which usually indicates that he doesn’t have the flush.
Shortly after he bets pot with $15,000 into $14,675, basically polarizing his hand to a flush or bluff.
Those are most likely the two reasons why Grandoli ends up making the call after going through the hand one more time.
Poker Hand of the Week Conclusion
Fantastic call by Mariano! But why did he make it?
There are three reasons: First of all, Eric is basically saying he has a flush by betting pot.
However, he might gave it away by double-checking his whole cards, which is a pretty reliable tell that a player doesn’t have a flush.
Followed by a quick pot size bet, which often is a bluff. Thirdly, Eric limp-called from UTG+1 preflop in a shorthanded poker game, which usually isn’t a strong hand.
Mariano knows all of the above, and manages to put the pieces of the puzzle together perfectly to make an amazing call.
