It’s that time of year again when poker players from every corner of the world begin their pilgrimage to Las Vegas for the World Series of Poker. The 2024 WSOP has finally kicked off!
This year’s series will take place from May 28 to July 17 at the iconic Horseshoe Las Vegas and Paris Las Vegas.
Anticipation is at boiling point with an unforgettable experience promised for poker enthusiasts from around the world.
A jam-packed schedule of 99 bracelet events is full of the old favourites with plenty of new formats to try out for those who like to keep it fresh.
A Brief History of the World Series of Poker
The World Series of Poker has a storied history that dates back to 1970, when Benny Binion, the founder of Binion’s Horseshoe Casino, invited seven of the best-known poker players to compete in a one-off tournament.
The event was a groundbreaking success, and it has since grown into the largest and most prestigious poker tournament in the world.
Over the years, the WSOP has expanded its reach beyond Las Vegas, with international events in Europe, Asia, and Africa.
The series has also seen significant changes in its format, including the introduction of online events.
The 2024 WSOP marks a new era for the series, with a focus on innovation and diversity.
The event will feature a range of new tournament formats, including a Pot-Limit Omaha Mystery Bounty event, two Seniors events, and a Mixed No-Limit Hold’em/Pot-Limit Omaha Double Bomb Pot event.
These changes are designed to appeal to a broader range of players and to provide more opportunities for players to win bracelets.
The Venues: Horseshoe Las Vegas and Paris Las Vegas
The 2024 WSOP will take place at the Horseshoe Las Vegas and Paris Las Vegas.
The iconic Horseshoe name has been a staple of the WSOP ever since its inception, only this is not the original venue.
Back in 2005, with the poker boom in full swing, the organisers took the decision to move the series over to the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino from the Horseshoe to cope with increased demand.
That move saw the WSOP make a new home for 17 consecutive years but eventually the venue was no longer up to scratch and the circus moved again, this time over to Bally’s Las Vegas and Paris Las Vegas.
Now, following extensive renovations, Bally’s has now been renamed to take the iconic Horseshoe brand.
Both Horseshoe Las Vegas and Paris Las Vegas are prominent resorts on the iconic Strip, offering an extensive range of suites and entertainment options.
For players who are travelling to play a modest schedule, there is plenty in the area to keep you occupied, along with the typical wide range of dining options.
Foodies will be delighted to find the Cafe Belle Madeleine and the Gordon Ramsay Steak in the Horseshoe property, while the Eiffel Tower Restaurant and the Mon Ami Gabi French Restaurant are located within the grounds of Paris.
Both resorts are also in a central area of the Strip, easily within walking distance to many popular places.

WSOP Player of the Year Rule Changes
The WSOP Player of the Year title is one of the most sought after accolades in poker. In fact, superstar names such as Phil Hellmuth and Shaun Deeb are thought to deliberately plan their schedule to maximise their chances of winning.
The problem was, it seemed that nobody at all was happy with the rules.
Many players went all-out to grind as many events as possible to accumulate min-cashes. Many weren’t happy that online results counted.
Now, it looks like the rules will be more suitable to keep everybody satisfied.
So what’s changed? Firstly, only 10 cashes can count towards a player’s score. This evens the playing field massively.
And players need a minimum of five cashes to even qualify for the leaderboard.
Finally, only one online event can be counted.
This year’s winner will collect a free ticket for next year’s Main Event, a fancy trophy, and a banner displaying their name at both the Horseshoe and Paris casinos.
Now we need to wait for all the stats nerds to start recalculating the results from previous years and watch the complaints roll in!
