Man wins $1,000,000 from a $5 side bet while playing poker in Borgata!

Betting $5, hitting a 20million-1 shot 6-card Royal Straight Flush and walking off with $1million. That’s the amazing Christmas present one poker player from New Jersey landed this week!

The massive payout went to Harold M.. He is a Lakewood, New Jersey gambler who hit the big time in Atlantic City’s Borgata Casino on a recent visit. Where he ended up scooping the $1million 6-card Royal Flush in diamonds.

The game of Three Card Poker is hugely popular in casinos around the US. And the bonus was introduced several years ago to mirror the slot machine bonuses on offer.

The Borgata says that it’s the first time the casino has had to pay out the huge score since it opened back in 2003. They added that according to experts at wizardofodds.com “the odds of hitting the 6 card Bonus Royal Flush are 1 in 20,348,320.”

Traditionally the highest payouts have been exclusively reserved for Royal Flushes in diamonds. Had Harold hit the same hand in clubs, spades or hearts he would have ‘only’ received $100,000.

How 3-card poker works

Three card poker sees each player – as the name suggests – receive 3 cards. You are playing against the dealer, and the idea is to bet on good hands and fold bad hands. Nothing unusual there.

3 card poker

The normal rules state that the dealer has to have at least queen-high for their hand to count. So in Harold’s big win above, for example, we can see that the dealer couldn’t have held the 9, 10, jack of diamonds.

Progressive Bad Beat Jackpots have been much in the poker headlines this past year or so, including a very contentious one at Nevada’s Red Rock Casino. But, this is the first big 3-card poker bonus jackpot to hit in a while…

How the $1million 6-card bonus was won

Harold M’s big scoop isn’t the first time the jackpot has been hit. Atlantic City casino Harrah’s among others also paying out the jackpot prize. For that to happen, the player has to match the three diamonds in his hand with the dealer’s three – as a side-bet to the main action.

The Harrah’s win back in 2011 saw the anonymous gambler stake $15. The same as Harold in actual fact, who snared his Borgata prize this week with just a $5 side-bet. The nominal $5 bet on the hand and a pair of $5 side-bets all paying out separately.
